Social and Community Development

Social and Community Policy

The Company upholds its commitment to continue to maintain good relations and provide long-term contribution to the development of communities around the mines by conducting various social, economic, educational and environmental activities based on the following 4 (four) pillars:

  1. Economic development
  2. Education and health empowerment
  3. Socio-culture and religious empowerment
  4. Infrastructure and environmental empowerment

The above activities must be continuously monitored and ensured that its implementations are effective and generate an ongoing impact.

Social and Community Programs

Through its various Social and Community Development programs, the Company supports the Government’s efforts to improve the economic, social, and educational standards of rural communities. The programs are, among others, empowering community potentials in handicraft, livestock farming, and fisheries; supporting cultural and arts development; improving the quality of educational infrastructure; and providing infrastructure. All activities in these areas are continuously carried out to improve people’s welfare.

ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

Through this program, the Company committed to support the efforts to improve the quality of life of the communities. The aim is to develop the communities’ competencies in small and medium enterprising to generate additional income by making use of local potentials. This program targets the communities around the Company’s operational area.

Berau Creative Workshop

Berau Creative Workshop is an ongoing program that has been carried out by the Company since 2016, collaborated with National Craft Council (DEKRANAS) to provide handicraft training from rattan, natural fiber and webbing, horns and shells, packaging, and weaving to Berau craftsmen.

 To improve the quality of craft products and expand the marketing access to national and global market for Small and Medium Industry (SMI) in Berau, the Company collaborated with Du’Anyam. Berau SMI now becomes Du’Anyam partner in supplying craft products  for domestic and overseas market.

 Paser Craft

Same as Berau Creative Workshop, Paser Craft is an ongoing program that has been conducted by the Company, collaborated with National and Regional Craft Council (DEKRANASDA) of Paser District and Du’Anyam. They provide training  to Paser craftsmen through Paser Craft program which aims to produce highly export quality craft products, as well as to market the products both to national and international market. As such, the local communities may earn income and incentives while still preserving its culture.

 Fisheries Cultivation (Binungan Site)

Fisheries Cultivation is a Local Business Empowering (LBE) program which aims to develop the economic community around the mine. In collaboration with PT Berau Coal as the mine owner, LBE program is conducted with bottom-up method where community-based activity ideas are implemented with the involvement of all stakeholders. One of the LBE’s flagship program is the cultivation of freshwater fish in Samburakat Village, Gunung Tabur Subdistrict. This program is an ongoing program since 2016, collaborated with Samburakat’s community farmer groups to build a hatchery and hatching of fish eggs.

Samburakat Village has now become part of the Fish Hatchery Unit and is expected to be a center of freshwater fish hatchery in Berau Regency.

Cattle Breeding (SDJ and Binungan Site)

In livestock farming, the Company collaborates with the local Livestock Farming Office of South Kalimantan to promote various livestock population enhancement programs, especially cattle, to increase the economy of cattle farmers and achieve meat self-sufficiency in South Kalimantan. A cattle breeding center has been established in 7 villages in Angsana Subdistrict. This program intends to help the surrounding communities build livelihoods and increase their income. In the long term, Angsana subdistrict is expected to be a center of cattle breeding.

The Company also establishes a cattle feedlot in Pegat Bukur Village, Sambaliung Subdistrict, Berau district. The feeding program that is managed by a Village-Owned Enterprise helps to make the communities of Pegat Bukur economically independent and give them knowledge in cattle feeding and marketing.

JIKAMAKA Entrepreneurship Training Program (Adaro Site)

With the Firefly community, BUMA organized “Jika Maka” program intensively from October 2018 in Tabalong district, South Kalimantan for communities who drop out of school. This program provides entrepreneurship, public speaking, motivation, as well as computer and internet use training according to the national education quality standards. This program also helps residents continue their education through the non-formal Level C program, or equivalent to senior secondary level in the formal education track.

Today, the graduates of “Jika Maka” have become entrepreneurs, owners of training agencies, or work in various village offices, governments, and private companies. The program helps residents around the mines to grow independently and sustainably.

Water Rides in Tumbit Dayak (Binungan Site)

Intending to contribute to economic development in tourism, BUMA cooperates with a Village-Owned Enterprises and Kampung Tumbit Dayak  youth organization to develop and  make the Long Lake (Danau Panjang) as one of the village’s tourism icons.

EDUCATION AND HEALTH EMPOWERMENT

Through this program, the company demonstrates its commitment to optimally contribute to the education of the surrounding communities. The aims are to break the chain of poverty, while also improving  their health and social welfare.

Basic Operator dan Basic Mechanic (BOBM) Education and Training

BOBM program constitutes a special education and training  as a heavy equipment operator and mechanic,  to youths around Lati, Binungan and Kideco sites and aims to train them as independent, skillful and responsible youths, as well as can support the manpower need of the Company.

Education Literacy Program (Lati Site)

The Company through BUMA assists libraries in several schools, SMPIT Ashohwah Tanjung Redeb, SMAN 5 Gunung Tabur, and SMAN 2 Rinding so that it can function optimally as a learning center. Thanks to BUMA, these libraries are now equipped with several computers as a means of technological introduction. For public high school SMAN 5 Gunung Tabur, this program has helped them win a National Library and brought home Best Library title. With improved literacy, Indonesia will grow with quality human resource.

 Health Campaign Related to Land and Forest Fire

To maintain respiratory health in areas around the mines, BUMA campaigned for the importance of the use of respiratory masks to 12 elementary schools and 3 middle schools in Sambaliung and Teluk Bayur SubdistrictS, Berau district, in connection with the poor air quality indeks due to the smoke of forest and land fires.

Mass Circumcision Program (Binungan Site)

BUMA’s Binungan site held free mass circumcision for 50 boys from three villages, namely Long Lanuk, Tumbit Melayu, and Tumbit Dayak. The event itself took place at the multifunction hall of Tumbit Dayak village, Sambaling, Berau. This activity is an annual program of the Binungan site and cooperates with Sambaling clinic.

 Nutrition Supplements for Toddlers and the Elderly

The Company and BUMA has developed an additional feeding program (PMT) that provides high calcium milk, eggs, green beans, sugar, and brown sugar to pregnant women, infant, and the elderly. This activity is done once a month in 12 integrated health clinics in 10 villages around the mines.

 Outstanding Teachers Programs

The outstanding teachers development program aims to support quality education, especially in Tanah Bumbu district. Eligible teachers in Tanah Bumbu had the opportunity to participate in the education training of the National Science Olympics. The teachers are expected to use their new knowledge to train outstanding students who may be able to participate in the National Science Olympics in the future.

SOCIO-CULTURAL & RELIGIOUS EMPOWERMENT

Through this program, the Company demonstrates its commitment to contribute to the social development of communities.

Qoran Learning Center Development (SDJ Site)

Demonstrating its social responsibility and corporate concerns for local communities, BUMA’s SDJ site, together with PT Sungai Danau Jaya and PT Tanah Bumbu Resources, inaugurated a Qoran learning space Sumber Baru Village, Angsana subdistrict. The learning space is a means for the community to organize informal Islamic education. This initiative hopes to contribute to building the positive character of the future generation in the area.

Customary and Sporting Events, and Friday Safari (Binungan Site)

BUMA’s Binungan site is committed to support and participate in the traditional events,  religious activities, and sports competition. This has a positive impact on the growth of mutual understanding and respect for the surrounding culture and customs.

INFRASTRUCTURE & ENVIRONMENTAL EMPOWERMENT

This program demonstrates the Company’s commitment to participate in improving the living quality of the surrounding communities through the fulfillment of basic infrastructure in the area. This includes maintaining and improving environmental quality.

Bridges Construction

Recognizing the need for Angsana Subdistrict to have safe and operationally worthy bridges, the Company has carried out bridge repair activities in existing bridges located  at Bayan Sari, Purwodadi, Karang Indah, and Sumber Baru Villages.

Water Resource Development

The importance of clean water availability encourages BUMA to support drinking water and community-based sanitation program (PAMSIMAS) in Mekar Jaya Village, Batulicin Subdistrict of Tanah Bumbu District, South Kalimantan. PAMSIMAS is a program sponsored by the World Bank and the local government with a target of providing clean water access to 100% residents of Mekar Jaya.
