THE USE OF RENEWABLE ENERGY
All diesel fuel equipments areis now using biofuels which have lower GHG emissions than using diesel in accordance with the Government regulations.
The use of biofuels directly reduces emissions and indirectly reduces fuel imports and increases benefits for domestic industries.
In addition toApart from preventing GHG emissions by using biofuels, BUMA also uses solar cells in several operational areas for Public Street Lighting (PJU). A total of 67 PJUs have used solar cells, with energy savings of 40.2 kWh or equivalent to preventing GHG emissions of 45.024 kg CO2e in 2020.
Sustainable Agriculture
The company through BUMA collaborates with Faculty of Agriculture of Brawijaya University to develop sustainable agriculture for communities around the mine who cultivate crops. Given that soil conditions in Kalimantan region are generally nutrient poor, iIn 2020, BUMA and Brawijaya University in collaboration with local farmer groups have developed effective agricultural methods and proper land treatment, given that soil conditions in Kalimantan region are generally nutrient poor, so as to improve their agricultural productivity.
Tree Planting
In carrying out mining operational activities, the Company and BUMA constantly prioritize environmental management aspects. Considering the important role of trees in various aspects of sustainability, we have taken the initiative to manage the environmental impacts from mining process through environmental restoration efforts by tree planting activities.
Tree planting has become a routine activity carried out every year, which is a form off the Company’s commitment in environmental management. Tree planting activities are carried outperformed regularly in the mine area, work site and employee mess. Last year we planted fruit trees (such as rambutan, sapodilla, mango, longan, guava, orange, and durian) in all employee’s residence mess areas at SDJ Jobsite. In addition to their benefits for saving nature and the environment, the fruits from these trees can be enjoyed by employees and the surrounding communities.
Mangrove Conservation
In the future, the Company and BUMA have planned plan programs that aim at to reducing emissions, saving resources, and caring for the environment. These will in turn contribute positively to the global climate change.
These programs include:
Renewable energy program, which is a program to reduce emissions and replace fossil energy with solar cells.
- Waste to energy program, which is a program to utilize household waste into “biomass”.
- Hydro Power Program, which is a program to produce electricity with turbines and generators driven by hydropower.
- Green Building Program, which is designing future environmentally friendly buildings.
